Miller 185 Wire Feed Wire Cleaner Oiling

  1. Millermatic 185 Wire Feed Problem

I have a fairly new MM 185 and the wire feed motor stopped working. I pulled it out and tested it and the motor works fine, so i tested the two leads that plug into the motor and i am getting positive voltage out of both of them, I would think one should be negative. Any help would be much appreciated, im just a kid in high school so i'm trying to avoid bringing it somewhere. thankyou.

Check the liner, it may be dirty and stopping the wire from feeding. Quick way to tell is take the tip off and see how much buildup is at the end of the liner.

yea the liner is clean and i can pull the wire inside the cord, so its not stuck in the gun, and the wire didnt weld itself to the tip either, i think its more of an electrical problem

Something shorted on the board maybe?

  5. Re: Millermatic 185 Wire Feed Problem

It doesn't look shorted but I'm not sure what to look for. I would think if it was shorted I wouldn't get any power to the two leads, but I just get positive voltage for both.

  6. Re: Millermatic 185 Wire Feed Problem

Put your meter leads in the two wires feeding the motor and trigger the gun. You should get a DC voltage reading that will vary with the wire feed speed control. Approx 4VDC to 24VDC.

When you press the gun trigger does the gas flow, or does the weld output turn on.

Fairly new? They quit making them in 2000 but they are great machines...Bob

  8. Re: Millermatic 185 Wire Feed Problem

yes, both the gas flows and the weld output turn on. and by fairly new i meant it was in good shape

  9. Cool Re: Millermatic 185 Wire Feed Problem

Does your have the toggle switch inside the machine right above the drive rolls that says spoolgun/wire feeder and is it flipped the right way?...Bob

  10. Re: Millermatic 185 Wire Feed Problem

i know that it is an electrical problem because the motor is getting positive voltage out of both leads, so i guess my question is what would cause this, or what is the most likely culprit

  11. Re: Millermatic 185 Wire Feed Problem

Your motor voltage is a DC voltage that that comes from the motor control board. You should be checking for this DC voltage across the two motor leads (pos. and neg.) not to chassis gnd. The drive motor is a 24 volt DC motor that runs on 4.5 to 24 vdc, to verify you have a good motor you could try disconnecting the motor and hook a 12 volt car battery to it. While you have the motor disconnected check the voltage across the two wires that feed the motor from the board. If no voltage from board, the board is probably bad

  12. Re: Millermatic 185 Wire Feed Problem

yea, the first thing i did was put 12 volts to the motor and the motor was fine so next i checked for voltage at the two leads that plug into the motor and i got positive voltage out of both of them. So i have no idea what now.

  13. Re: Millermatic 185 Wire Feed Problem

If you got positive voltage from both the black and red leads, you'd have Zero dc voltage, it that a correct assumption.

  14. Re: Millermatic 185 Wire Feed Problem

that is correct, but both leads are white, almost all the wires in the thing are white and marked with numbers

  15. Re: Millermatic 185 Wire Feed Problem

Anyone have any thoughts? Its getting annoying using my buddies welder.

  16. Re: Millermatic 185 Wire Feed Problem

At this point, may as well take it to an authorized Miller repair center and have them figure it out...

  17. Re: Millermatic 185 Wire Feed Problem

Did you ever find out what the problem was with your 185 ?

  18. Re: Millermatic 185 Wire Feed Problem

Start a new thread of your own. State what your welder is doing and what measurements you have done. You can get the owners manual from Millerwelds.com
List the first 5 letters and numbers of the serial number, this will tell me how old and allow me to pull of the right diagram. To start with you must have weld voltage before the motor will work. Motor control needs weld voltage as a base power supply.
